Nicole Stimson,
Manager, Website Team

In 2016, Nicole Stimson began a Level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship with South Cambridgeshire District Council, with Cambridge Regional College as the training provider. Nicole excelled in her apprenticeship, receiving a nomination for Apprentice of the Year and a Hunts Post Award Commendation.

Nicole progressed to Level 3 of the Business Administration apprenticeship and upon completion secured a full-time position with the District Council’s communications team as Content Manager of the website.

A few years later, South Cambridgeshire District Council introduced a management learning program into its Continuing Professional Development portfolio and Nicole jumped at the chance to deepen her learning and boost her career.

Nicole said: “I applied for the management apprenticeship and passed. I completed the Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor apprenticeship with the Institute of Leadership and Management. The training and experience I gained has led me to where I am now. I am still at South Cambridgeshire District Council, working with the same team, but in December 2021 I was recruited to the position of Website Team Leader. I am extremely proud of how far I have come and the progress I have made in my career. I would not be where I am today without the learning and support provided by training providers and my employer.

The positive experience I had made me want to promote how powerful learning can be. When I was in school, there was never any talk of learning, it was always about going to school, graduating and going to university, which is great for people who want to do that.

For those who do not wish to follow the university route, an apprenticeship is an excellent alternative. I don’t think I would have reached management level at my age if I had gone to college. I’m much further along in my career than I would have been had I taken an alternative path. I am still young and I have plenty of time to consider higher education, either through a university degree or through a higher level apprenticeship.

Nicole will join the guest panel at the Apprenticeship information evening Q&A on Thursday, February 10 so prospective apprentices can ask questions of a former apprentice to get a first-hand look at the apprenticeship experience.
