Schools were surveyed in fall 2021 and early 2022. The statistical indicators fell into two categories: inputs or measures of the qualities that students and faculty bring to the educational experience, and outputs or measures of graduate achievement related to their degrees.

American News examined the quality indicator data and then normalized the value of each indicator around its mean. Depending on the domain, the indicators were weighted differently based on their importance determined in consultation with experts in each domain. The final scores were rescaled so that the school with the highest score received 100. The scores of the other schools were recalculated as a percentage of the highest score.
